Old English initial necklace, letter Y. An initial is about identity: your name, your family, and the people you carry with you. Some wear their own letter, some wear the first letter of a child, a partner or someone they miss. Blackletter, the lettering most of us call Old English, was written by hand by medieval scribes in Europe for hundreds of years, starting around the 1100s. Gutenberg used it to print his Bible, and today it is the classic look of family crests, diplomas and heritage. Wearing your initial in that lettering joins a simple personal symbol with a long tradition.
Who it's for: an initial necklace is a gift for her, for anyone whose name begins with Y, for bridesmaids and best friends, and for birthdays, graduation, Mother's Day or "just because". It is also a lovely way to wear the initial of someone you miss.
The story behind it. This Y letter pendant is cut from shimmering gold color fused dichroic glass in an Old English style font (as close as possible) and fused in our Florida studio kiln. It is set on a sturdy stainless steel bail with a slightly larger base, for a clean, minimalist look. It is one of the glass pieces we have been making for more than ten years. Y begins names like Yasmin, Yara, Yusuf and Yosef, and its branching shape looks graceful in blackletter.
Made for the beach. The glass is fine in salt water, so you can wear it surfing, swimming or diving. Our 316L stainless steel is fine in salt water. It won't rust, tarnish or turn your skin green.
What is dichroic glass? Dichroic glass carries micro-thin layers of metal oxides that reflect one color and let another pass through, so the colors shift as you move. Each pendant is fused, annealed and slowly cooled for strength in our smoke-free Florida studio. The photos are only a representation. In person it is even more vivid.
Frequently asked questions
Which necklace length should I choose?
Choose 16, 18 or 20 inches in the drop-down. A 16 inch length sits closer to the neck, and 20 inches hangs lower.
Is it real gold?
No. The gold color comes from the dichroic glass itself. It is glass, not gold or plating, and it shifts and glows as the light moves.
